No Frizz Curly Hair Products

I have fought my curly hair most of my life. Starting in about 7th grade I would blow dry my curls straight and then seal the deal with a straightening iron.

Curly hair just wasn't cool.

I've had times when I would wear my hair curly, but I never felt comfortable in my own skin when I did. It felt like a frizzy mess on top of my head. What seemed to look okay at the beginning of the day would inevitably look terrible by mid-afternoon.

Last year, after 38 years of fighting it, I decided it was finally time to figure out my curly hair. I committed to wearing my hair curly more than I straightened it. And I did! I found a routine that worked for my hair and something crazy happened... I actually grew to love my curls.

Not only that but I also noticed my hair was healthier and starting to grow again (it had stopped growing a year or two before for no reason at all).

Now I want to share the products that have helped me embrace my curls! Before we get into that though, if you are someone who is wanting to love your curls you have remember these three very important things:

1. Curls are not meant to be tamed. They have a mind of their own and there is beauty in the chaos.

2. Frizz = volume. It isn't the enemy. There are things you can do to make it more manageable, but the goal is NOT to eliminate it entirely. We don't want to walk around looking like wet curly haired cats.

3. It takes more than a few times to get the hang of your curls. Don't give up! It takes some time for your curls to form and then to create what you call "curl memory". The more you do it curly, the better able your hair is able to form that memory. Keep tweaking and trying until you find a routine that works for you!

   
   

Ok, on to the products!

1. Shampoo and Conditioner

This shampoo and conditioner is as good as the expensive stuff. It's for all curl types and smells amazing too!

2. Curl Cream

This is the Holy Grail of curl creams. It repairs, hydrates and styles. It's the perfect base and the first step after washing your hair. I apply this to soaking wet hair while still in the shower!

3. Dream Coat Spray (Frizz Control)

Do not skip this product! It gives the best results when trying to tame frizz. It does an incredible job protecting your curls against humidity

5. Hair Gel

I have tested just about every hair gel out there. This one by Innersense takes the cake when it comes to hold, non-flakiness and being long lasting.

6. Hair Foam/Mousse

This "I Create Lift Volumizing Foam" from Innersense does exactly what it says. Lifts at the roots and gives my curls great volume! As with all Innersense products, a little bit goes a long way. So even the small bottle will last me quite a while. I prefer the foam over a mousse since it is less likely to cause any flaking of the product.

7. Hair Oil

Hair oil is another one you don't want to skip! Once your hair has formed a hard cast from drying with the other products, you will use the hair oil to "scrunch out the crunch" leaving you with soft, bouncy curls. I really love this hair oil as it does the trick and smells AMAZING. The only downside is they have a hard time keeping it in stock! Here is another great option.

Other products that are useful in achieving your best curls:

A satin or silk pillowcase will help your curls go a long way into the next day.

A continuous spray bottle is a game changer! The key to great curls is HYDRATION. Keeping them as wet as possible while applying product is key. This bottle is great for when your curls are starting to feel a bit dry but you aren't done applying all the product.

The tangle teezer is the best brush I have found for curly hair. It helps create curl clumps and is super easy to clean by just running it under water.

Any piece of 100% cotton will do, but this towel is great for scrunching the excess water and product out before diffusing.

THE BEST hair dryer with diffuser attachment. I've had this hair dryer for over 4 years and it is still going strong. I love the length of the prongs on the diffuser attachment which add great volume without disrupting the curls. It has 4 heat settings which is optimal for keeping your hair healthy and not fried.
