Loved this discussion on @councilofmomspodcast on how to have better relationships with our older kids.

One thing that was brought up was to not take life too seriously.

*News flash!* Life can be hard.

The more fun we can have with our kids the better our relationship will be. This also brought up a point about letting them to be themselves and to not care so much about what everyone else thinks.

What are some ways you help your kids realize that there is more to life than all the serious and hard stuff?

Years ago in his talk titled “Fathers”, Elder Christofferson said something that has remained with me ever since. He said:

“We call on media and entertainment outlets to portray devoted and capable fathers who truly love their wives and intelligently guide their children, instead of the bumblers and buffoons or ‘the guys who cause problems,’ as fathers are all too frequently depicted.”

The very fact that God himself chose the title of Father tells us just how noble and divine the role of father is.

Good, righteous men and fathers deserve better than the labels they often receive. They deserve to know that their efforts to be good men and fathers are seen and so appreciated.

I am grateful for a man who sacrifices every day for his family. Who strives to keep the covenants he has made with his Heavenly Father. Who makes us laugh. Who teaches our kids by example. Who honors and uses his priesthood to bless others, especially his own family.

Men don’t often express feelings of inadequacy, but that doesn’t mean those feelings don’t exist. While there is much I could say about this, Elder Christofferson said it best when he said:

“To my brethren, the fathers in this Church, I say, I know you wish you were a more perfect father. I know I wish | were. Even so, despite our limitations, let us press on. Let us lay aside the exaggerated notions of individualism and autonomy in today’s culture and think first of the happiness and well-being of others. Surely, despite our inadequacies, our Heavenly Father will magnify us and cause our simple efforts to bear fruit.”

To all of the fathers out there who are trying their best, know that we see you and we are so grateful for your efforts. Your examples of righteousness are helping our children see the stuff that true men are made of.

I know not every family situation is the same. Father’s Day can be a difficult day for many. To them I say to remember our Savior is a master mender of broken things, especially when those things are hearts.
